Overview

Design for America's (DFA) design program builds on a multi-year partnership with Unilever. In 2020, Unilever launched MELÄ’, a science-based skincare product line designed specifically for melanin-rich skin. This 2022 summer opportunity focuses on democratizing the science of skincare and building a trusted community around health and wellness.

Design Kickoff

The problem space as well as the objective was explained in depth by the DFA team, after which a design framework to be used was introduced. (Immerse, Reframe, Ideation, Prototype, Ideate, Build, Test)

Interactive sessions were had with a global and multi-cultural participants, where we collaborated to understand the problem at hand. The immerse phase entailed a deep dive and extensive research (primary & secondary). This ensured that  proper contextualisation, an  understanding of the various stakeholders and a human-centered approach was achieved.

To further organise the results of the deep dive, constellation maps and empathy maps were used . This allowed a fitting persona to be developed for the next phase of the project - Reframe.

Reframe

During reframe a narrower focus was decided on based on insights in the form of

1. Design Goals

2. Measures of Success

3. How Can We Statements. Out of the 6 HCW's developed ,  the following statement was selected:

"How can we create an avenue that showcases to young adults in Africa with MRS, the positive results informed skin care practices brings"

Design Goals

Ideate, Build and Test

With the design goals outlined 2 main ideas were stripped down to test validate key assumptions through a survey. In the case of the selected reality show idea:

1. to understand if people will be interested in a reality show centered around skin care. For which a mockup design was made and a survey rolled out to gauge interest.

2. People will be influenced to purchase Mele products

3. People will be better informed about how to care for their melanin rich skin

A summary of the results of the survey are outlined in the prototype video below
